Painting the Capital logo, an Edinburgh skyline in charcoal and lime

Painting and Decorating Services in Edinburgh

Painting the Capital is a decorating company working across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Whether you need one room freshened up, the outside of a house repainted or a kitchen given a new colour, every job gets the same careful preparation and the same quality paint.

Interior Painting and Decorating

Tired rooms, scuffed woodwork and dated colours can all be put right with a fresh finish. Our decorators repaint walls, ceilings, cornices, skirtings, doors and panelling in flats and houses across Edinburgh, from tenement bedrooms to tall Georgian sitting rooms.

Everything starts with protection and preparation. Floors, carpets and furniture are covered with dust sheets or polythene before a tin is opened, and stay covered until we leave. Water marks, smoke stains and pen marks that would show through new paint are sealed first with a Zinsser stain-blocking primer, so the finish stays clean.

What we paint

  • Walls and ceilings
  • Cornicing and ceiling roses
  • Doors, frames and skirtings
  • Panelling and feature walls
  • Stairwells and hallways

What you can expect

  • Furniture, floors and carpets covered throughout
  • Stains sealed before painting
  • No paint left on glass or flooring
  • Waste and solvents disposed of responsibly
  • Labelled touch-up paint left for you

Exterior Painting

If it has been years since the outside of your house or business was painted, or the colour simply feels dated, we repaint render, masonry, brickwork, soffits, timber and trims.

Outside, preparation decides how long a coating lasts. Mildew is treated and killed before it can break down the new paint, loose caulking is cut out and replaced, and loose nails are re-set and painted. Plants, paths and the area around your property are covered while we work, and the job is carried out with the right access equipment and safety procedures.

What we paint outside

  • Rendered and masonry walls
  • Painted brickwork
  • Soffits, fascias and gables
  • Timber porches and verandas
  • Windows, doors and trims

How we prepare

  • Mildew treated and killed
  • Loose caulking replaced
  • Loose nails re-set and painted
  • Plants and paths protected
  • Paint cleaned off windows before we go

Kitchen units resprayed in dark charcoal grey with a dark worktop and white upper cupboards

Kitchen Unit Spraying

Cabinets are the first thing you notice in a kitchen. When the layout still works for you and the units are sound but look tired, a respray can give the whole room a new look without ripping anything out.

We spray cabinet doors, drawer fronts and end panels for a smooth, even finish in the colour you choose, and we can repair cracked vinyl doors before spraying them. A typical kitchen is turned round in about a week.

What we spray

  • Cabinet doors and drawer fronts
  • End panels and plinths
  • Tall housings and larder units
  • Cracked vinyl doors, once repaired

Why a respray

  • Keeps the layout you like
  • A new colour for the whole room
  • About a week from start to finish
  • Far less upheaval than a refit

A nursery wall hung with a mural wallpaper of hot-air balloons and clouds

Wallpapering

Wallpaper can change a room more than any paint colour. We hang papers on single feature walls and through whole rooms, including large mural designs like this nursery wall.

Walls are filled and sanded smooth first, because paper shows every dent beneath it. Then each length is hung plumb, with the pattern matched at the joins and neatly cut in at ceilings, skirtings and switches.

What we hang

  • Feature walls
  • Murals and large panels
  • Whole rooms

How we hang it

  • Walls filled and sanded first
  • Lengths hung plumb
  • Patterns matched at the joins
  • Clean cuts at ceilings and skirtings

Spraying, Finishes and Colour Advice

Two more ways our painters and decorators can help, on their own or alongside any of the work above.

Airless Spraying, Coatings and Special Finishes

Some jobs need more than a brush and roller. Airless spraying covers large areas quickly and evenly, protective coatings guard surfaces that take hard wear, and special paint finishes add character where a flat colour would not.

Tell us what the surface is and how it is used, and we will suggest the right approach and product before any work starts.

What it covers

  • Airless spraying
  • Protective coatings
  • Special paint finishes

Good for

  • Large walls and ceilings
  • Surfaces that take hard wear
  • Rooms that need a distinctive finish

Colour Consultation

Choosing colours is often the hardest part of decorating. We can talk through options for a single room or a whole home, thinking about the light each room gets, the period of the property and the finish that will wear best.

We work with paints from Johnstone’s Trade, Dulux, Farrow & Ball, Tikkurila and Crown, so there is a wide range of colours and finishes to choose from.

We help with

  • Colours for one room or a whole home
  • Matching colours to the light
  • Choosing the right sheen for each surface
